About the firm

Utility Mapping Services (UMS) is a professional utility engineering practice specializing in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) across North America. Founded in 2002, it combines advanced geophysical, bathymetric, LiDAR, and survey technologies with non-destructive vacuum excavation to establish georeferenced positions of underground utility infrastructure. It delivers 2D and 3D BIM and CIM models compliant with ASCE/CI 38 and ASCE 75 standards, and offers its proprietary GeoFeature data management platform to enable integrated, data-driven decisions for project owners, designers, utility operators, and contractors.

Capabilities

Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)

Service website

Provides comprehensive subsurface investigations to identify, map, and depict underground infrastructure, minimizing risks before construction begins.

  • Phase I Utility Designating

Conducts records research, surface geophysics, and electromagnetic locating to provide preliminary horizontal utility maps.

  • Phase II Utility Locating

Utilizes non-destructive vacuum excavation and test holes to determine the precise vertical and horizontal position of utilities.

  • 3D Utility Modeling and BIM Integration

Develops precise 3D depictions and Building Information Modeling outputs to facilitate clash detection and conflict analytics.

Field Operations

Service website

Deploys advanced geophysical and remote sensing technologies to map physical infrastructure and environmental features.

  • Advanced Geophysical Surveys

Employs electromagnetic and ground-penetrating radar systems to locate metallic and non-metallic utilities.

  • Bathymetric and LiDAR Surveys

Acquires high-resolution underwater depth data and terrestrial laser scans to construct precise spatial models.

  • GPS and Conventional Land Surveying

Employs high-accuracy positioning systems to establish georeferenced locations for all mapped utility features.

Engineered Solutions

Service website

Analyzes project designs against utility data to mitigate impacts and optimize construction delivery through proactive engineering.

  • Utility Conflict Analytics and Clash Detection

Identifies spatial conflicts between proposed civil designs and existing utilities early in the planning process.

  • Relocation and Accommodation Engineering

Designs value-engineered strategies for utility avoidance, accommodation, and relocation, including cost estimating and scheduling.

  • Bid and Construction Support

Prepares specifications, bid documents, and agreements while providing on-site engineering support during construction.

Technology Solutions

Service website

Leverages proprietary interactive map-based platforms to modernize data management, collection, and stakeholder collaboration.

  • GeoFeature Mobile and Desktop

Enables field personnel to capture, view, and sync acquisition and quality assurance data in online or offline modes.

  • GeoFeature Cloud and Repository

Manages business rules for geospatial data integration, aggregation, secure cloud storage, and project analytics.

  • GeoConflict Management

Automates conflict identification and populates utility matrices within a shared interactive mapping collaboration environment.

Projects

Sun River Connector Trail

Great Falls, MT · Bridges

Project details

Provided subsurface utility engineering as part of a team for a project adding 10 feet of width to the I-15 Sun River Bridge to establish a non-motorized community link. The scope entailed driving sheet piles for a reinforced concrete moment slab cantilevered over the sheet piles, earning an ACEC-Montana Small Projects Category Honor Award.

Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) City Center Guideway and Stations

Honolulu, HI · Transit · Client: Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART)

Project details

Completed a Phase I utility investigation for the City Center Guideway and Stations (CCGS) project, which completes the eastern segment of the rail system across the island of Oahu. Mapped existing utilities along an approximately 5-mile corridor to deliver utility information for design and construction coordination.

Los Angeles World Airport Automated People Mover Utility Engineering

Los Angeles, CA · Airports · Client: Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)

Project details

Executed a 3D utility engineering project to locate and map all utilities along a two-mile corridor for the Automated People Mover project under the ASCE/CI 38-02 Standard. Applied multiple advanced 3D acquisition technologies to deliver a 3D model and BIM output with defined Quality Levels.
