Leaders in Development of Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging

Website

About the firm

Pacific Advanced Technology (PAT) is a defense and industrial R&D engineering firm specializing in infrared hyperspectral imaging technology. Operating as a contractor for the US defense community for over 30 years, PAT develops miniaturized infrared hyperspectral cameras under US Army and Special Operations Command contracts for chemical warfare agent detection, IED detection, explosive processing lab identification, and camouflaged target recognition. Its lenslet array diffractive optics technology collects complete hyperspectral data cubes in under one second and is packaged in sensors weighing under five pounds for group 1 drone deployment. PAT's technology has also been commercialized as the Sherlock optical gas imaging camera, sold worldwide for fugitive gas leak detection and quantification in oil, gas, and industrial markets.

CBIRD - Lenslet Array Multispectral Imaging Proof of Concept

Defense · Client: US Army

Project details

US Army SBIR-sponsored program that proved the concept of using arrays of diffractive optical elements placed near the focal plane array to simultaneously image multiple spectral channels. A 4x4 lenslet array covering the SWIR to MWIR bands captured 16 spectral images per frame, enabling real-time target detection. A complete hyperspectral data cube of hundreds of bands was collected in under one second, leading to follow-on funding.

Athena - MWIR and LWIR Hyperspectral Camera Prototypes

Defense · Client: US Army

Project details

Follow-on SBIR program to CBIRD in which two hyperspectral imaging units were built - one covering the 3-5 micron MWIR band and one covering the 8-11 micron LWIR band. Lenslet array optics and the mechanical actuation system were successfully embedded in closed-cycle miniature dewar coolers. Field testing demonstrated detection and identification of gas-phase chemical warfare agents at a standoff range of 1 km, leading to development of the Helios drone prototype.

Helios I - LWIR Drone-Mounted Hyperspectral Imager

Defense · Client: US Army / SOCOM

Project details

Prototype LWIR infrared hyperspectral imaging sensor developed under US Army SBIR funding with additional support from Special Operations Command. Helios I weighs under five pounds and is designed for flight on group 1 miniature drones. All optics and the actuation system are embedded in the dewar, and a lenslet array configuration collects a complete hyperspectral data cube from 8 to 11 microns in under one second.

Sherlock Optical Gas Imaging Camera

Oil & Gas

Project details

Commercial infrared optical gas imaging camera derived from PAT's defense hyperspectral technology. First developed from a proof-of-concept legacy camera created in 1994, the Sherlock addresses oil and gas industry needs for detection and identification of fugitive gas leaks and has been sold worldwide to industrial customers.
