Innovative, pragmatic, and sustainable structural engineering and hazard resilience solutions
Martin, Chock & Carden is a structural engineering practice in Honolulu serving Hawaii and the Pacific region. It applies structural design, applied research, and planning to new high-rise and low-rise construction as well as the renovation, repair, and retrofitting of existing buildings in the private and public sectors. With more than 50 years designing across Hawaii, the practice brings deep institutional knowledge of local building stock and site conditions, and its wind, seismic, and tsunami research has contributed to improved Hawaii and national building code standards.
Design solutions for new high-rise and low-rise buildings and for the renovation, repair, and retrofitting of existing structures, spanning master planning, conceptual design, construction documents, BIM models, and onsite observation during construction.
Structural systems and coordination from site selection and planning to conceptual design and production of construction documentation.
Alterations and retrofits utilizing historic structural systems knowledge and advanced design techniques, specializing in concrete, masonry, steel, and wood-framed structures.
Development of complete BIM models to support design, budgeting, and coordination throughout the development process.
Specialized structural engineering to mitigate blast hazards and protect critical facilities and occupants.
Comprehensive assessments and focused issue-specific reviews using field surveys, non-destructive testing, and detailed analysis of existing structures.
Technical investigation, forensic analysis, and expert witness support for building damage and failures.
Comprehensive building surveys and reports for clients assessing property acquisitions.
Structural assessments of existing buildings to evaluate performance against wind and earthquake hazards.
Post-event structural surveys following earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and tsunamis.
Investigation of corrosion damage and design of protection systems, including passive anodes and active impressed current cathodic protection.
Non-invasive field testing using hydrostatic floor level meters, reinforcing bar pachometers, and electrical half-cell potential surveys.
Analysis of risks associated with natural and technological hazards, climate change adaptation, hazard mitigation, emergency response planning, and cost-benefit analysis.
Risk analysis for natural and technological hazards to identify vulnerabilities in buildings and infrastructure.
Strategies and design practices to adapt structures to long-term climate impacts.
Development of measures to reduce long-term risk to human life and property from natural disasters.
Proactive planning to prepare organizations and communities for rapid response during disasters.
Economic evaluations of mitigation strategies to optimize disaster resilience investments.
Wind, seismic, and tsunami engineering research that drives the development of improved building codes, resilient construction techniques, and advanced loss estimation models.
Applied research on wind and seismic forces to improve building standards and resilience.
Pioneering research contributing directly to the development of national and Hawaii building code standards.
Development of advanced techniques to estimate post-disaster losses for effective planning.
