Embedded systems, custom hardware, and software design engineering
LSF Design is an electronic product design specialist based in Westford, Massachusetts, founded in 2008. It develops custom hardware and software for embedded systems, FPGA and SoC platforms, and compute-intensive scientific applications. Serving clients across defense, medical, aerospace, robotics, and industrial markets, it has designed over five hundred products ranging from compact PCBs to large blade-class boards. Since 2015, LSF Design has served as the designated U.S. technical and design support partner for Enclustra GmbH, a Swiss manufacturer of FPGA/SoC modules.
A dedicated team brings broad FPGA engineering expertise to projects in areas including high-performance interfaces, embedded systems, SoC integration, TDM, and scientific applications. The practice is a Certified Design Partner with Xilinx and a Design Services Network partner with Altera.
Provides hardware description language coding in Verilog and VHDL for custom target devices.
Implements high-performance physical interfaces including PCIe, DDR3, DDR4, HMC, and multi-Gbps SERDES.
Combines processing blocks and custom logic on System-on-Chip architectures.
Develops time-division multiplexing and calculation-heavy routines for scientific sensors.
Builds RTL simulation and test environments to establish lab confidence before physical silicon layout.
Develops structured verification benches using SystemVerilog, VHDL, Verilog, C, and Python.
Enforces thorough simulation regimes to ensure logic behaves correctly before physical hardware testing.
Maintains codebase history using secure off-site Git version control coupled with bug tracking databases.
Develops market-ready electronic products and hardware solutions for startups, small businesses, corporations, and government agencies.
Creates physical board layouts using PADS PCB, utilizing a coordinated engineering network to hit fast timelines.
Manages complex physical routing including LVDS, HDI, RF, power supplies, and analog-to-digital conversions.
Aligns bill-of-materials and layers with commercial targets, optimizing for volume production or prototyping.
Builds custom tracking enclosures and power systems to test devices-under-test during manufacturing setup.
Traces and troubleshoots active circuits using a fully featured testing laboratory.
Creates low-level code that seamlessly interfaces with hardware, optimized for performance and reliability.
Writes high-reliability logic spanning low-cost 8-bit controllers to multi-core 32-bit application processors.
Creates specialized firmware and custom diagnostic suites to run directly on hardware platforms without operating system overhead.
Ports and configures operating systems such as Linux, PetaLinux, and FreeRTOS for unique processor targets.
Writes robust kernel-level interfaces and diagnostic utilities to connect application software with physical chips.
Coordinates parts procurement, custom board building, and assembly to streamline the transition from design to hardware.
