Structural design for an innovative mass timber truss system realized as an unprecedented 3D timber space frame.

Structural Engineering and Mass Timber.
KL&A Engineers and Builders is a Rocky Mountain-based engineering and construction practice founded in 1994. Operating across six offices in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah, it integrates structural engineering, civil engineering, land surveying, steel construction, mass timber design, and embodied carbon life cycle assessment under one roof. With more than 7,000 projects completed and 120-plus team members, KL&A serves commercial, education, cultural, residential, industrial, and energy markets and is recognized as the premier structural designer of mass timber in the Rocky Mountain region.

An integrated, project-centric delivery model spanning all building materials and construction techniques. KL&A's structural engineers collaborate closely with key trades from schematic design through construction administration, covering concrete, mass timber, steel, and emerging materials such as rammed earth, structural insulating panels, and structural glass.
KL&A uses a field-to-finish approach, placing the project engineer on the survey crew for the preconstruction site survey, then transitioning that same engineer through design and into construction administration. Services span civil construction, site development, and drainage engineering.
Conventional and aerial field-data collection using optical instruments, GPS equipment, and FAA-licensed UAS crews. Services range from boundary determination and ALTA surveys to georeferenced orthophotos and volumetric stockpile calculations.
Permitting, design, staking, and survey support for oil, gas, and coal operators in Wyoming and beyond. Services cover the well pad lifecycle from application through reclamation, plus pipeline and road corridor staking.
Full-service steel construction delivered through an integrated, at-risk approach with a portfolio spanning $25K to $150M. Scopes include miscellaneous metals packages, monumental stair systems, multi-story structural frames, and industrial and residential work. Steel detailing translates complex designs into fabrication-ready 3D models for in-house and third-party fabricators.
KL&A has organized a dedicated Team Mass Timber of approximately 15 engineers across all levels to lead mass timber design and innovation. Since the early 2000s, mass timber has been central to its strategy for reducing embodied carbon and construction time. In 2019, KL&A spearheaded the early adoption of the 2021 IBC Tall Wood provisions in Denver, enabling code-compliant wood buildings up to 18 stories.
KL&A's Team Carbon provides structural life cycle assessment and embodied carbon consulting. An early signatory to the SE2050 Challenge in 2020, KL&A has contributed LCA data to the SE2050 database and publishes an annual Embodied Carbon Action Plan. Services span impact quantification, material strategy, education, salvage and deconstruction consulting, and concrete mix design.
